The difference in one minute
Box braids anchor with a small knot at the root — quicker to install, slightly cheaper, a little more tension at the scalp. Knotless braids start with your own hair and feed extensions in gradually — flatter roots, less pull, more installation time.
In heat and humidity
Sweat is braids' real enemy here. Knotless roots lie flatter, dry faster and itch less in humid weather; box braid knots hold moisture slightly longer at the root. If you sweat a lot — training, market days, beach holidays — knotless earns its extra cost.
Longevity and edges
Both last four to eight weeks with night wrapping and gentle scalp oil. Edges are about the braider, not the style: even tension matters more than knot versus knotless. (It's why we check tension with you section by section — our braiding page explains the process.)
The honest verdict
